FAIRTRADE COTTON

The programme focuses primarily on the people at the start of the textile value chain: the farmers who grow and harvest the cotton. This opens up fair trading conditions for them, as well as new avenues for social change and greater environmental protection. In order to meet Fairtrade standards and gain certification, smallholder farmers must fulfil a number of requirements. They must comply with environmental and social standards and ensure health and safety in cotton production. In return, they receive premiums which, following a democratic vote, can be used for community projects.
