Why are specialised safety shoes essential on a building site?

There are numerous hazards lurking on building sites that can endanger your feet. Falling tools, building materials or components can cause serious injuries through crushing. Equally dangerous are nails, screws, metal splinters or shards of glass, which can pierce the sole of the foot if protection is inadequate (risk of puncture). Wet, muddy or dirty surfaces significantly increase the risk of slipping. Added to this are weather conditions such as cold, wet and damp, which are not only unpleasant but can also lead to serious health problems. Not to be forgotten is the strain caused by standing and walking for long periods on hard surfaces, which places considerable stress on the joints, back and muscles. Without suitable safety footwear, you risk not only painful injuries but also long-term damage to your health. The German Construction Industry Accident Insurance Association (BG BAU) therefore stipulates that, for most activities on building sites, safety footwear of at least Class S3 must be worn.

OUR SHOE RECOMMENDATION

These safety features are what make ATLAS site boots so safe

1. Toe caps: your shield against crushing injuries

All ATLAS safety footwear for the construction industry features high-quality toe caps that can withstand at least 200 joules — equivalent to an object weighing approximately 20 kg falling from a height of 1 metre. ATLAS uses traditional steel toe caps and lightweight aluminium toe caps (ALU‑TEC), which are up to 50 per cent lighter, provide insulation against cold and heat, and do not generate a magnetic field. For construction workers who do a lot of walking, the reduced weight significantly reduces fatigue.

2. Puncture-resistant midsoles: protection from below

Construction sites are often littered with nails, screws, metal splinters or shards of glass. A puncture-resistant midsole prevents sharp objects from piercing the sole and injuring the foot. ATLAS uses modern, flexible, lightweight and metal-free textile mid-soles — ideal in the presence of magnetic fields or near electrical installations — as well as classic steel mid-soles, which also offer excellent protection. Both variants comply with the standard and offer the same level of protection; the choice depends on your requirements.

3. Slip-resistant soles: A secure footing on any surface

Construction sites are rarely level or dry. Whether it’s mud, snow, wet planks or spilled liquids — there is always a risk of slipping. ATLAS safety footwear features specially developed treaded soles that provide a secure grip even on difficult surfaces. Our sole solutions for every application: MPU (micro-polyurethane) soles — extremely lightweight, highly flexible and shock-absorbing; PU/TPU soles — robust, abrasion-resistant and resistant to oil and petrol; rubber soles — offering the best slip resistance and high heat resistance.

4. Waterproof membranes: Dry feet in all weathers

On building sites, you can’t choose the weather. GORE‑TEX® membranes in our premium models are 100 per cent waterproof and windproof, yet breathable, allowing sweat to escape. This durable technology remains fully functional even after years of use. The result: your feet stay dry and warm, even in continuous rain or when wading through puddles and mud.

5. Ergonomic fit: Less fatigue, better performance

A working day on a building site often lasts 8–10 hours or longer. Uncomfortable shoes cause blisters, pressure sores, foot and joint pain, back problems, as well as premature fatigue and loss of concentration. ATLAS construction site shoes are ergonomically designed and, with their anatomical footbeds, provide optimal support for the arch of the foot. Cushioned midsoles reduce impact, wide fits are available even for larger feet, and flexible materials allow for natural freedom of movement.

Care and maintenance: How to make your construction site boots last longer

Safety footwear for the building site is subjected to heavy wear and tear. With the right care, you can significantly extend its lifespan.

Daily care

1. Remove coarse dirt: At the end of the working day, brush off mud and dust

2. Leave to dry: Never dry your boots on a radiator or in direct sunlight! It’s best to stuff them with newspaper

3. Remove the insoles: Leave them to dry separately (this reduces odours)

Weekly care

1. Cleaning: Clean with lukewarm water and soap

2. Waterproofing: Treat leather shoes with a suitable waterproofing spray

3. Check: Inspect for damage (cracks, loose stitching, worn-out soles)

Monthly care

1. Intensive leather care: Treat with leather grease or balm

2. Check laces: Replace any damaged laces

3. Sole check: Check the tread and buy new shoes if there is significant wear

Important: Damaged safety shoes no longer provide adequate protection! Replace them in good time.

Tip: Use two pairs in rotation so that the shoes can dry out completely between use and will last much longer!

Which insoles are permitted in safety footwear?

As a general rule, only insoles approved by the manufacturer or tested with the specific model are permitted. These are listed in the EC Declaration of Conformity.

Which safety class for which occupation?

S1/S1P: Warehousing, logistics, light assembly

S2: Kitchens, cleaning, food

S3: Construction, skilled trades, outdoor assembly, agriculture

The employers’ liability insurance association provides sector-specific recommendations.

How do I look after my ATLAS safety shoes properly?

Clean the upper regularly with a soft brush and lukewarm water. For leather, we recommend using a waterproofing treatment to maintain its water-repellent properties. Also, make sure to check the soles for wear and replace the shoes in good time.

Are ATLAS safety shoes available in different widths?

Yes. Thanks to the wide-fit range (W10, W12, W13, W14), even people with wider feet can find a shoe that fits perfectly. A good fit prevents pressure points, helps avoid blisters and ensures long-lasting comfort.

What does the S3 classification mean for safety boots?

S3 in accordance with EN ISO 20345 means: toe cap (200 joules), closed heel, antistatic properties, energy absorption in the heel area, waterproof upper, puncture-resistant sole and treaded outsole.

What protection class is required on building sites?

In the construction industry, protection class S3 is generally required, as it combines toe protection, puncture resistance and water resistance.

Are there any styles available with a particularly wide fit?

Yes, ATLAS offers a range of widths, ensuring that even wider feet are optimally protected and comfortably supported.
