Why are specialised safety shoes essential in the building trades?
The most common hazards in the building trades are crush injuries caused by falling tools, building materials or heavy components. Equally dangerous are puncture injuries caused by nails, screws, metal splinters or shards of glass, which can pierce the sole of the foot if adequate protection is not worn. According to DGUV statistics, slips, trips and falls account for 23.6 per cent of all workplace accidents – dirty floors, wet tiles or slippery workshop floors significantly increase the risk. Added to this are electrical hazards in the electrical trade, where electrostatic discharges can damage sensitive components or, in the worst-case scenario, even cause fires. Not to be overlooked is the chronic strain caused by prolonged standing and walking, often in awkward positions such as kneeling or on ladders, which place heavy strain on the joints, back and muscles.
Without suitable safety footwear, you risk not only painful acute injuries but also long-term health problems such as chronic joint pain, back problems and premature wear and tear. The relevant employers’ liability insurance associations therefore stipulate that, for most manual trades, safety footwear of at least class S1P or S3 must be worn – depending on the specific area of work.

Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning (SHK): Waterproof and slip-resistant
SHK installers work in damp environments (bathrooms, basements, outdoor areas), have frequent contact with water and dirt, often work whilst kneeling or bent over, carry heavy loads (radiators, pipes) and are exposed to fluctuating temperatures (boiler rooms, cold stores).

Tip: Look out for the HRO marking (Heat Resistant Outsole) if you regularly carry out welding work on pipework. The sole is then heat-resistant up to 300°C and can withstand contact with hot surfaces.
