Safety classes in agriculture: What do you really need?

Choosing the right safety class is crucial for your protection. Here you can find out which class is suitable for which activity on a farm.

S1 and S2 safety footwear: For dry indoor use only

S1 offers basic protection with a toe cap, antistatic properties, an energy-absorbing heel area and a fuel-resistant sole. S2 adds a water-repellent upper to this.

Important: Neither class offers puncture protection nor a treaded sole, which is why they are not suitable for typical agricultural work! Their range of use is very limited and covers only dry storage halls, light sorting work in enclosed spaces, and office and administrative tasks on the farm.

S3 safety footwear: The standard for agriculture

S3 safety footwear extends the S2 standard with crucial protective features. The puncture-resistant midsole provides reliable protection against nails, screws and sharp objects commonly found on farms and in stables. The treaded outsole offers significantly better slip resistance on wet, dirty or muddy surfaces. Combined with the waterproof upper, S3 boots are the industry standard for professional agricultural work.

S3 safety footwear is suitable for almost all agricultural tasks:

• Livestock farming: feeding, mucking out, milking, animal care
• Arable farming: tractor work, sowing, cultivation, harvesting
• Stable work: cleaning and maintenance tasks
• Farmyard tasks: repairs, servicing, maintenance
• Machinery work: operating and maintaining agricultural equipment
• Field work: working on unpaved tracks and fields

Expert tip: For most agricultural work, you should always wear at least S3 safety footwear. This offers the best balance of protection, comfort and value for money.

S5 safety boots: Maximum protection in extremely wet conditions

The S5 safety class is designed for particularly wet and dirty conditions. These solid rubber boots offer the highest level of protection with 100% waterproofing, a puncture-resistant midsole, a treaded outsole and a toe cap. They are manufactured in a single mould (solid rubber or polymer) and are therefore completely waterproof right up to the top of the boot.

S5 safety boots are ideal for:

• Stable work involving large amounts of water and slurry: wet cleaning, mucking out in heavily soiled conditions
• Working in puddles and standing water: after heavy rain, flooded areas
• Winter work in snow and slush: winter feeding, snow clearance
• Chemicals and cleaning agents: disinfection, intensive stable cleaning
• Wetland habitats and areas near water: pasture management in wetlands

The German Agricultural Insurance Association (SVLFG) requires Category S5 work boots for many tasks on agricultural holdings.

Tip: Many farmers use both types: S3 low-cut shoes or boots for normal work and S5 solid rubber boots for extremely wet conditions.

Typical areas of use for ATLAS safety footwear in agriculture

Livestock farming and stable work

In livestock farming, workers are exposed to specific hazards on a daily basis. The hooves of horses or the claws of pigs and cattle can cause serious injury to the feet, whilst slippery stable floors caused by manure, feed and water pose a constant danger. Added to this are nails and sharp objects lurking in wooden structures or on the floor, as well as wet conditions and chemicals encountered during cleaning work.

For these demanding conditions, we recommend:

Ankle-high models or boots in particular offer additional protection against water and dirt seeping in. For extremely wet conditions during wet cleaning or deep slurry, S5 solid rubber boots are the best choice.

Expert tip: When working with horses or cattle, you should pay particular attention to sturdy toe caps – a kick exerting several hundred kilograms of force is not uncommon!

Arable farming and field work

Arable farming is dominated by outdoor work on varying surfaces. Unpaved field tracks, damp arable land, uneven ground with stones and clods of earth, as well as changing weather conditions (rain, heat, cold) place high demands on footwear. Special protection is required when getting on and off a tractor, when operating machinery where there is a risk from oils and fuels, and during sowing and harvesting when handling heavy sacks and equipment.

The following have proven their worth here:

• FLASH 6905 BOA XP ESD S3: Featuring a BOA lacing system for quick donning and doffing (handy when frequently changing tractors)
• XR 485 XP ESD S3 and XR 585 XP ESD S3: Lightweight, flexible models for long walks in the fields
• FLASH 6105 XP ESD S3: A comfortable all-rounder with excellent cushioning

The ESD (electrostatic discharge) feature is useful when working with electronic devices and modern agricultural machinery, as it protects sensitive on-board electronics.

Tip: For field work in changeable weather, we recommend Gore-Tex models – they keep the rain out but allow sweat to escape, thus preventing your feet from overheating!

Farm work and machinery maintenance

When carrying out farm work and machinery maintenance, you’ll be faced with a wide range of tasks: repairs and welding, woodwork and fence maintenance, changing tyres and oil on machinery, as well as general farm upkeep and cleaning. This involves a range of hazards – from sharp tools and hot surfaces to oils and fuels.

We recommend:

• Models with fuel-resistant soles: standard on all S3 footwear, essential for tractor maintenance
• Flexible, lightweight designs: For tasks that require a lot of movement

Important: When carrying out welding work, gaiters should also be worn to protect against flying sparks!

Greenhouse work and horticulture

Greenhouses and horticultural settings have specific conditions: high humidity and watering lead to constantly wet floors, whilst smooth tiles or concrete slabs become extremely slippery when wet. When working with fertilisers and plant protection products, chemical resistance is essential, and prolonged standing and kneeling require particularly comfortable footwear.

The following are particularly suitable:

• S2 models for dry, heated greenhouses: water-repellent and breathable
• S3 models for outdoor and wet conditions: with a treaded sole and puncture protection
• Models with particularly good cushioning: reduce strain during prolonged standing

Expert tip: When working in greenhouses in summer, breathable models are worth their weight in gold – closed rubber wellies quickly lead to sweaty feet and discomfort!

Winter work and cold weather

Farming knows no winter hibernation. Feeding and tending to the animals takes place whatever the weather; snow clearance and keeping paths clear are just as necessary as carrying out repairs in frosty conditions and winter maintenance. Stable work in sub-zero temperatures requires protection against the cold, without your feet overheating as soon as you step into warmer areas.

For extreme winter conditions, we recommend:

• Models with CI (Cold Insulation) labelling: special cold insulation
• Thick inner lining: often featuring Thinsulate™ for warmth without added weight
• Gore-Tex membrane: Keeps moisture out whilst allowing sweat to escape (important during temperature changes)
• Extra slip-resistant soles: For a secure footing on snow and ice

Important: Even in winter, you should choose breathable footwear – fully insulated rubber boots lead to sweaty feet, which then get cold!
